http://www.fuelly.com/ can get you a much better average of what kind of mileage (according to your speedometer/odometer) you are getting, and also will allow you to compare it to other users with your same bike. Depending on how I ride/what I'm doing I have been averaging between 36-42 mpg.

On a side note, I recommend resetting your trips meter each time you fill your tank. That way you will know how many miles you can go before light comes on, and will enable you to know when you are at 25%, 50% ect of tank

    Who would have thunk it?!

Currently, with a gearing change and a few other mods, my mpg has dropped some.
The speedometer needs to be reset, it's about 3% off as per my gps.
I had similar results on a 600, 40 when its nursed around town or steady freeway cruising. 45+ mpg when I ran it in the top 1/3rd of the tach on a north run. I thought this might be a result of less load on the engine? Doesn't make sense though for the obvious, more fuel for more rpm. Maybe its just more efficient throttle management somewhere higher in the powerband than what I'm using on commute; torque to build speed but hp (not much at 4k) to maintain it? Its a conundrum to me...

Then add on, relatively, the cost and service life of brake pads, tires, and degree and cost of maintenance.... overall cost of operation is about the same, imo.

    But fun factor?

If you reeally want gas mileage you need to go 4 teeth smaller than stock on the rear sprocket. It will make a huge difference from your current non-stock gears. It will however take away a some acceleration away from first gear. Your top speed will go up by a good bit though and your speedometer will be very close to right on. Good Luck!
