    Voltage reading

The other day i was driving and about an hour down the road when i shifted into neutral it died, wouldnt start back up battery was dead. This morning we put multimeter on it and it read 12.6 when i tried starting it it went to 4 volts wouldnt start, got a new battery it starts and runs idles at 12.36 but when i rev it goes down to 11 something. I thought it was suppose to go up to 13 or 14 volts when you rev it up? Is this my issue originally that killed my battery or was the battery just junk before? It was tested and came out at 42cca after it died yesterday mid ride.

have you checked the rectifier, sounds like a bad R/R to me.
its possible it could be the stator, but i would check the R/R first and would check for any bad or corroded connections.

you will need a OHM meter, the instructions and specs should be in the mechanics manual.
how long has the alarm been in the bike?where is the lead wire for the alarm attached too?

as far as R/R's go,if its not a mosfet rectifier,it will go out.they last awhile, but not as long as mosfet.
you will know if its not mosfet because in the model number,it will have a SH in the beginning of it.
if it is the R/R,try and upgrade to the mosfet R/R

Sounds like a bad R/R for sure. Get a new one as soon as possible because you'll just keep destroying the battery if you keep running it.

yes,you will destroy the battery if its a bad R/R.
if you battery is old,i would replace it along with the R/R anyway.if the battery did get ruined, its possible it could ruin the new R/R when you put it in.can put it under more strain than needed.
this happened to me with my last R/R.put new R/R but not new battery and it gave out.the battery was 8 months old,but i didnt replace R/R until after the battery was 4 months old.

Yup, absolutely correct, That's why it's always a good thing to replace both at the same time after determining that the R/R is bad and ruined the old battery. Sucks, but better than having to buy 2 batteries or re-replace a R/R.

im thinking too,you wont have to take out your alarm,i would check the other things first.
the R/R's last a good bit,but is prone to go out, some sooner than later.
when you look for a new R/R,make sure it has a FH in the model number, thats how you know its a mosfet.

My bike has 9,090 miles and uv been reading most peoples go out around 10,000 miles first. I still dont know how to check if the R/R is the actual problem.

im not sure if your bike has 5 wire or 6.you would attach the ohm meter to each wire and see what it reads.
you would be able to check the R/R and stator wires seperatly.
but i couldnt tell you what the specs are,you would need the manual to tell you the ranges you are looking for.
maybe someone has the manual for it and can instruct you on it or let you barrow it.
what is the make, model, year of your bike.
lol ummmmm i guess its in your sig, 2006 cbr1000rr

actually, before you do anything.check to see if there is/was a recall on stator or R/R.
the stator had a recall and yours maybe was never changed or yours has been done and gone bad.
might be the same with the R/R
    this is a dealer fix.
i know on suzuki, they stamped the frame to indicate thet the R/R was replaced by dealer.
might be something to look into.

Only just over 9k. I did a little researching myself and found at least one fellow that had over 20k on his and no problems. There was another guy that had a bad connection at ground and the charging system tried to overcharge the battery and overheated the R/R, thus destroying it.

Saige may have hit the nail on the head right away by suggesting that you check the connections. Especially after having just put a new alarm system in....Good luck.

Anywhere where you were connecting the alarm system and where there may be a ground connection. Check that battery ground too.

Look at the connections on the R/R, see if they're burnt/melted. Maybe too late for the R/R though.

yes, this is true too,the bike might have multiple grounding points.
one someplace on the frame, sub frame and motor itself.
corrosion is a mother too,so,might be good idea and do a maintenance check on all the wiring, plus to make sure there is no burnt wires or any that could be starting to melt together.
