    Speeding cameras

Well it has happened my parents and a friend in TN got speeding camera tickets. They both wear portable units on the side of John Sevier Highway. I looked it up and found nothing in TN about them using them. They got mailed to their homes with a pic of them driving. Just something to keep a heads up for people who travel up there. Something else I think is weird is the girl I knew that got the ticket has a passport 9500 and it never went off, and that thing never misses.

Modern radar boxes do not use radar / laser to measure speed so in this case the Passport 9500 is only as good as the database it carries...

cameras take a timed pics and measure the distance you've moved between pictures.
The twisties - not the superslabs -separate the riders from the

I was telling my father in law about Tn and the camera deal last week, Rico is up there right now also. From what I am hearing from peeps I ride with up there, there is a set of them at the end of Deals gap on the Straightaway that runs out on the tenn side. I have come to hate the TN. side and refuse to even pass the look out anymore. Because of the police there has been a few small buisnesses closed due to no one wanting to go over the ridge to TN. Another case of the cops funding there county on the backs of car and bike enthusiasts. The speed limits are very low on that side too.

That sucks I just got off the phone with my brother that lives there and he said highway through Knoxville is now covered in them. I hope this trend does not spread to here. As for the dragon the limit is down to 35 on the TN side that is just to low. Sucks to cause I am up there all the time visiting family.

Sadly enough it is almost certain it will. When red light cameras are introduced speed cameras always follow.

AZ has been using speed cams for quite some time. Its been proven an effective tool to collect revenue from the citizens.... oops I meant save lives.

Is it any secret red light cams/speed cams and such are for revenue? The folks that manufacturer our red light equipment install it free and get a cut of each ticket issued, the state and local governments love this cash cow deal.

Anymore I go up alone and don't even go over there. If I have someone that hasn't ridden the gap I'll take them and go to the half way mark and turn around. screw them ! They (Tenn) backed off a bit 2 years ago because they were taking such a hit on the local stores and gas stations, owners started bitching to the cops that they were ruining there businesses due to no bike traffic. Looks like the cops are running out of money again. You would think they would embrace the motorsports world a bit more. The amount of car and bike activity in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is huge ! They lost the Honda Hoot 3 years ago, that sucked. That was a great event untill it went from NC to TN. They ran it into the ground.

Its wrong in so many ways too. How the hell can the courts get away with this ? It will get so bad if the pattern continues and comes to florida. The fleecing of America by way of speeding tickets. Pretty friggen desparate if you ask me ! Once again everyone suffers because our politicians can't maintain a budget.

Soon it wont be worth it to have street bikes, I would say save the cash for track days not tickets.

This is the number 1 reason I am not in favor of red light cameras. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Speeding camera to me is sneeky but I do support the red light cameras. I lived in Knoxville and there is an intersection on ceder bluff that was always full of bad accidents, they put a red light camera in and after a month no accidents. I hate to say it but it worked. I saw it first hand.

Did you time the light at the intersection to see if they made engineering improvements in addition to the camera? Were there other traffic improvements around the area that could have contributed to the change? Had the volume of traffic through that intersection changed?

Many times anecdotal evidence should be discounted unless ALL variables are accounted for. There are many other instaces in which their use has increased the collision rate.

Regardless, they are the same principle and one should either be for or against as a matter of the principle itself, not simply because one wants to pick and choose which instances in which it is important to stand up for one's convictions.

For example, I do not support any method of monitoring the public 24/7 to look for any infraction or violation of the law. We have a certain expectation of privacy, even while in public although it is somewhat diminshed in that case as people are present. Cameras strip away any and all privacy. I don't really want to worry about someone watching me scratch my ass or adjust my crotch on video. At least with people I can make sure no one is looking.

Honestly there may have been other changes I did not know about. I can say they had on the news before the cameras were live the rate of running red lights was huge. They did a follow up that showed less than 2% off people ran lights after the cameras were live. I hate to say it but most people act different if there is a real possibility of getting caught. I had a garage that kept having a theft issue, I put a fake camera outside the door and an ADT sign on the door and the theft stopped. I so agree we are filmed way to much. I would rather see more cops then cameras any day. I personally thing the speed limits are outdated and need to be raised speed measuring has some gray areas too. To me red lights are black and white, it was either red or not red and you ran it or not.

I won't go into a long debate here regarding the red lights as we've already been through it all in the other thread. Suffice it to say without looking into all the variables you could probably get a job doing research for the IIHS.
