UN Says "Yay" US Says "Nay" for Cuban Trade Embargo Lift

UN vote condemns US embargo on Cuba
    By The Associated Press
UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- The U.N. General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to condemn the 47-year U.S. trade embargo on Cuba, an annual ritual that highlights near unanimous global opposition to America's hard-line stance toward the communist island.

It is the 19th time in a row that the world body adopted the symbolic measure, and the first since U.S. President Barack Obama took office in January. Many representatives to the world body expressed hope the new American administration will work to normalize relations with its longtime enemy.

But Wednesday's 187-3 vote _ with two abstentions _ was unlikely to sway Washington, which has loosened financial and travel restrictions on Americans with relatives on the island but has said it would not lift the embargo until Cuba accept some political, economic and social changes.

So the Cuban Trade Embargo has been an up and down issue with some lapses but essentially it has been in effect since 1962 primarily due to the Cuban missile crisis. where the US Government had established a blockade around the island to prevent any trade going in and out until the Russian missiles were removed.

Well the missiles have been removed....and the Trade Embargo has become a little better over time.

What are your thoughts ? should we have this Embargo still ?

I find it funny because the United States Government is using the Excuse "it would not lift the embargo until Cuba accept some political, economic and social changes."

Which ultimately means We hate Fidel Castro....and the Communistic Political System...

Yet....we have HUGE Trade with China....and China owns 22% of the United States Debt...Yet they are also Communists....Interesting....

So what it really comes down to.....They Hate Fidel Castro....but from what i have been told his brother moving in is even worse than he is....who knows...

    Just food for Thought...

^ Raul is better than Fidel. however lately he has been leaning more and more to the left with the Bolivarian movement.

Cuba has too many human rights issues still for the US to even think of playing ball.

maybe when Fidel dies, Raul may make some drastic changes, but I would not hold my breath, becuase if you know who their closest friends are then you would understand.

Supposedly their sister lives in Miami and is writing a book and in it she says Fidel didn't believe in communism, but went with it to stay in power. Also she says Raul is worse than Fidel.

The truth is, you should consider yourself lucky if you even occasionally get to make someone - anyone - feel a little better. After that, it's all about the people that you've let into your life.”— J.D.

Honestly, we need all the help we can get to stabilize our economy, and if that means selling goods to "commies", then so be it. I think it's ironic that we are hurting their country by refusing to trade with them because their government is harmful to its citizens. Aren't we just doing more damage?

they are hurting, but its not from the US not doing business with them, there are plenty of other countries that are doing business with them. its the government that is oppressing the people. with that comes poverty and crime.
