So, I went for a quick ride tonight to see how my current gear would hold up in the 50 degree temps. I have been riding through the spring and summer with a mesh/textile jacket and regular jeans - but this definitely aint gonna cut it through winter.

I need a leather jacket and some pants/overpants!

Which jackets have people had good experiences with? So far I am looking at the leather icon motorhead jacket in all black.

What do people do for pants? Seems like the local shops don't really carry a whole lot of pants (I have seen full racing leathers around, but that isn't really my style and I just can't see myself rolling up to work with some knee pucks).

Any suggestions would be great! Also, I'm hoping not to break the bank, so cheap is a definite bonus.

Thanks,
Mike

oh yeah - hey cyclegear guys - you got anything good in the store? I would prefer to buy local. Something about buying clothing online just doesnt sit right with me. :)

Hey cat-a-tonic, yeah this cold weather is tuff on the body, but the bikes sure do love this cold dense air. For the winter I have a leather jacket that I wear, and usually wear jeans, but if it is really cold, I might put some long john's on under my jeans.

When all else fails, tuck under the windscreen and hugs the engine. That provides some heat.....

As far as leather jackets, you can get a preforated or non-preforated jacket. Pros and cons to each, the preforated ones will still allow the cold air to move thru so you will still be cold, but you can wear in the summer. The non-preforated jackets are great in the winter, nothing gets thru, but really really hot in the summer.

Hope this is helpful. Personally after the new year I am gonna buy a 2 piece leather suit, this way I have the best of both worlds.

i got a 2 piece leather suit from Teknic. I will probably try the jacket out tomorrow night on the way over to the meet. Hell i will ride in full leathers. On my suit you can take the pucks on or off. Don't know about other suits though.

Thanks Griffin!

I've seen some "riding jeans" from joe rocket and icon on a few websites that sound like they have a thicker/reinforced denim - maybe those are the way to go? Anyone ever try those?

I have a set of the Icon jeans. They are heavier than normal denim. I rode a bit this morning with the jeans, leather jacket, etc and it was not too bad. This was early while it was still pretty cool.

Try Draggin Jeans. Double layers at the knees and heavy duty denim. A friend told me that they have Kevlar stitching.

Try downing like 4-5 shot of Crown Royal.......that's what I do, heats up the insides until a few minutes later when - frankly - ya just don't give a damn!
