View Full Version : How To Get Invited out to a Private Ride

You may be a new member, perhaps you've been here a while and you keep asking yourself "does anyone on this forum actually ride? If they do, I don't see a whole lot of stuff about their rides posted." Well my friend, you are in luck, we DO ride - lots of us ride lots and lots and lots of miles. Some of us are putting down over 500 miles on our sportbikes in a given weekend.
Still, you may be wondering "if all this riding is going on why am I not seeing it?"
Well, friend, it's simple. We don't know you and we haven't decided whether or not to invite you to a ride or not. You may be a great guy or gal, but frankly this is the internet and odds are REALLY good that SOME of you reading this right now are exactly the kind of people we want to avoid.
How to tell if we don't want you - are you one of those:
People who can't seem to find the proper gear to wear to a ride
People who show up high to a ride
People who show up drunk to a ride
People who think a ride with friends is a race and are super excited to prove how fast they are - whether it kills you, them, or someone else doesn't matter
People who don't seem capable of shutting the fck up about the ride, the route, where they went and what happened when they got there
People generally drama prone or otherwise immature
So - you may be asking yourself "How do I show that I am NOT that type of person?" Here are some tips:
Show up at open rides, the ones that are announced
Don't be an asshole when you get there, enjoy the ride, have fun, smile a lot and introduce yourself
Don't feel the need to announce to the entire world the route, the speed and your awesome chicken strip inducing corner exit speeds
Other ways include:
Show up at meet and greets
Be wearing a modicum of gear when you get there
Don't be an asshole, enjoy the company, have fun
Don't feel the need to announce how fast you are, how awesome a rider you are, and how you're absolutely, positively NOT a cop
Also consider:
NOT doing dumb shit on the board
NOT griping about your girlfriend, boyfriend, tranny, midget, whatever that has now left you and moved on to greener pastures - that's YOUR problem, friend, we don't care
NOT bitching about stupid shit that doesn't matter
NOT being a drama queen
NOT being a hater / pansy / delicate little flower we all have to worry about offending
NOT Declaring to everyone that you're new in town, looking for the hotspots to ride and stunt and you're absolutely, positively NOT a cop
I hope this helps - enjoy your time here and with any luck we'll see you on the road . . . or never hear from you again.

NOT Declaring to everyone that you're new in town, looking for the hotspots to ride and stunt and you're absolutely, positively NOT a cop:crackup:
I'll add to the open ride list my opinions:
Don't complain that the ride is starting too early in the day, or that it's on Saturday instead of Sunday, or that it's heading north instead of west, or whatever else you wish it would be instead of what it actually is.
Don't get mad when you show up 5 minutes late and everyone is already gone
Don't complain after the ride about the pace being too slow when the ride was announced on the board as being slow.
Don't show up with bald tires. Bald heads are fine though :D
Don't show up with an illegal bike (no plate, not registered, no headlight, etc)

All these rules make me ineligible to attend any private rides.:sad11:
This is great info though. Nobody wants to pick up body parts as part of their rides.

Don't walk around at rest breaks declaring "you guys are all slow, I barely made it out of first gear in some of those turns" We're not racing you - @sshole.
RIDE the line the group is riding. If the entire group goes to the yellow line and then dives single file to the white line you are acting like a total tool by riding RIGHT beside someone into a turn. It says "I don't care about you as a rider, your comfort or safety zone, I am just making a point and the point is that I can be a jerk."

PoppaNoDoz
08-04-2010, 05:59 PM
I've thrown people off my rides before - back when I announced rides on the internet. "hey everyone, I'll be at this spot on sunday" sort of thing. Yeah, drunk, hungover, high, stupid, inconsiderate, ego-ed out of their mind, no gear, bald tires, tires running on about 10lbs of pressure, guys holding weed, guys with outstanding warrants.
Ultimately this is a form of high intensity self actualization - some people get that, some don't.

Yes, need I remind you that simple leather gloves are not really considered gear, when it's 30 degrees outside.
(It didn't, however, slow you down, btw you were also late! :))

good post. I dont show up with gear to rides 'cause I dont have the money for any right now, but I also dont push myself to keep up with others and act like an asshole without gear.
p.s. looking forward to getting gear and pushing myself and bike a little more and having even more fun with y'all.

i ride alone, yeahhhhhh with nobody else...you know when i ride alone, i prefer to be by mysellllllffff.
someday i'll get off my fat ass and start attending some open rides. i only know a few folks here in lakeland with sport bikes, but never ride out with'em. i hit the road with my old man and his harley and go to the rustbucket swap meet in webster fl. and while im not out to break any land speed records, getting passed by fuel tankers in the middle of the green swamp really aint my speed either.

LOL A lot of those reasons are why I stopped doing public rides. No offense, and even when I posted the "rules" and who I wanted and didn't want I got grief about it. I was a picky leader, or w/e it was. I just wanted to make sure that the people I went with were the people I'd want riding a 400+ lb projectile anywhere near me!
I still ride, I am more of the laid back, "want to have fun and not race around at 100+MPH everywhere we go" kinda dude! I very much enjoy the rides put on by PND, it was a blast to ride with those guys, I have ridden with others to include HeWhoIs (GREAT laid back ride leader BTW!)
I was the guy who was too selective when it came to invitees to my rides. People at one point got upset that I was being so selective. But when I go into a turn, I want to know with a pretty high % of certainty that I'm not gonna get 6 o'clocked by some fucking dildo who went in too fast and now made me pay for his fuck up!
Good post PND!

Reckless, hewhois and Poppa, very good leaders and do some great rides!
I will very occasionally announce a slow ride to teach some new peeps some of the more popular rides, especially now with abby learning the rides.
Oh yeah, you don't have to be 2 feet off my azz to show how awesome of a rider you are.
Anyways, once again, great thread.

PND, I always love the sarcastic truth that you add to your posts. This one did not disappoint. Clap-Clap
I know I should take advantage of some of the open rides just to meet some fellow riders but I don't due to many of the reasons you have listed. I have lead many nruns, with friends and coworkers, and there is always that one person (generally a friend of a friend) from time to time that never gets invited again for one reason or another.
This post should be a sticky.

Nice post PND...
There is this thing called group etiquette... if you go on a ride and do NOT have any then its a possibility you will not be asked to join that group again...
all BS aside, if there is a ride posted about the pace of the ride then dont expext any more than whats posted... if its too slow for you the use it as future reference, if its to fast do the same... if your not having fun, then when you get to a stop, tell the group leader and or the sweeper that you are out... if you just split then everyone in the group will be looking for your ass...
There are a lot of good leaders/riders on this board, if your invited I would suggest NOT turning it down....
Its OK to say.. You guys are too fast for my liking, or your too slow... by all means ride your OWN ride, if its not your pace then cut out of the group before something happens...

AWESOME info for a new member, I like the think I wouldn't fit any of the negative criteria but I need to get out and meet you guys like you said...
as far as xstatik's post above, I would definitely want to come out to a few slow/intermediate rides to see just what pace that it.....I would never wanna be the guy on a ride too fast for my skill level and hold everyone up or worse.....I just wanna be a SPONGE and LEARN!!

Fashionably late if you don't mind... :D
I now realize that a leather jacket, leather gloves, helmet and boots are less than adequate gear for our Florida winter weather. That was the coldest ride I'd ever been on and thank you for the glove liners (which I still need to get back to you), trying to warm my hands on the exhaust of Vtwin's SV at pace was fun though...:sinister:
There is absolutely no reason anyone should feel like they couldn't have a talk to another rider in a group when things get a little mixed up in communication. Sometimes people are use to riding with their friends and are just looking to expand their group, different groups have different rules. If the person that is getting the talking to can not understand the reasoning then it's time to let that person go, ya know, the you're fired approach.

And it isn't easy trying to keep 30+ bikes in a group and keep them together. YOU play a big roll in keeping a ride a good ride. All it takes is ONE bike in the middle somewhere that cant control his/her bike and the entire group suffers.
One biggy that drives me nuts is the guy that is to cool to be in the middle and wants to be off the back. I get it I would prefer to be off the back too. When theres a designated sweeper at the rear stay infront of him. I found out last time with crash in the back having someeone with HIDs on makes it so much easier to look back for those lights and know that the last bike is in

Yep and the lights made it a million times easier. I used to look for tomi and a wave but the lights are very cool. Good idea for anyone leading a ride to stick someone off the back with HIDs. Kinda stumbled on the idea but it works great.

Good post PND!!! It was things that you mentioned that actually made me get off a sportbike for a few years. I can't tell you how many rides I have led where people try to pass others in corners, or one of my favorites is where someone takes off in front of me when I'm leading to break the sound barrier and then misses the turn we need to take.
Everyone needs to understand that when we ride in groups we really need to be looking out for each other.
Another issue is if you notice someone is faster then you in the curves, go ahead and wave them by on a straight. There is no loss of "face" when doing that. Trying to keep that rider behind you at all costs is a recipe for disaster!!! I've seen this way to much on the Dragon. By helping them you in return help yourself!!!
Keep the shinny side up everyone!!!

Everyone needs to understand that when we ride in groups we really need to be looking out for each other.
Exactly, we're NOT competing with each other. This isn't a race, it isn't a track day, it's friends out on a ride together.
The guys who show up with the ego, who show up in a competitive mindset really are a HUGE buzzkill for the rest of us. We invited you out because we thought we liked you and you "get it" - show up with the mindset that you have something to prove and it's a big downer.
It's like "aw man, I thought this was gonna be fun . . . " they change the whole dynamic of the group and turn something friendly into something tense and competitive.

This is why I mostly ride with another group though. I can remember years back (03-05) ridin with the TSB crew and streetnights and having lots of good times. Then came the ride that pissed me off a lil. Riders, Ive never ridin with, passin me in corners on the inside of a left hander (in same lane). When we got to Shamrocks, I made sure it was known that ish does not fly well. Then one guy drinks a beer while there...I was just like..really...
After that I kinda chilled out from TSB for awhile. The people here are great and I do look forward to riding with you all. Dress for the fall, its not if but when, and always ride your own ride. Be safe out there always and there is no reason why you should try to impress people with your riding, save it for the track!! LOL People will notice if you can ride or not very easily.
I def look forward to more PND rides though, had a blast on the last one!

Why would you want to. Nobody rides exactly like you do so you constantly have to adapt to other riders.

It's true, solo rides can be very therapeutic. Help clear the mind, refocus, put the noise behind you for the day. At the same time, group rides (when they work) are a lot of fun. Shared experience, learn new skills, meet people who have different backgrounds, different perspectives.

To bad they are rare though. Or maybe I've just had the wrong people in the group on the rare occasion I took part in a group ride. It's just such a crab shoot. Iguess you should just find a small group that rides the same as you and not let anybody break in no matter how much they beg.

Very true.
I remember the day I got my brand new 1977 Kawasaki KZ650, I was so excited, my 2nd bike, and I moved up from a KZ400, it was so awesome! I went to sleep with a huge smile on my face.
The very next day my 22 year old sister died, she had lost her 2 year battle with leukemia. She was in Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC. My mom flew up to be with my dad, he was already up there. They couldn't afford to fly us up there.
My 12 year old sister went to a friend's house, and my brother and I were basically on our own.
He was 15, and I was 18.
It was 2 days before Christmas.
I spent many hours on that bike trying to heal and trying to come to realization of the finality of it all.
It was done, and no do overs.

Heh I also love the "NOT a cop" part lol.
I think it'd just be safer to say that if by chance you are one then you will be watched and under lots of scrutiny, unless people already know you and you're cool lol.

Every one is different. I dont ride unless my mind is clear and I am ready to ride. Every problem I have ever had on a bike was because my mind wasnt there, I was off in la-la land.

Then we are polar opposites. When i ride i do a lot of thinking. May not be the best thing to do for some but it works great for me. I'm (almost) never really distracted from traffic. The only time i ever have a clear mind is on the track. As OSB once explained to me, as soon as you roll onto the track you become a different person.

I think you and I are on the same page. I do a lot of thinking on solo rides, it's not like I am distracted, it's more of a "zen" sort of thing. The thinking is at a deeper level in my consciousness - not so much "right in front of me" like traffic, the route, etc. The thinking is more like meditation. Bills, relationships, my future, "life" sort of thinking. I'm not "zoned out" so much as "tuned in."
You know what, shut up and eat your damned pancake . . .
I miss having my saturday morning pancake and the guy who made them too... :sad11:

I'm right there with ya man. 99.9% of my rides are by myself. I'd like to ride in groups but its only when I can get what you listed right there. I don't want to be around those that aren't there to do that. Don't want to ride with those that keep running up beside me and change lanes without keeping everyone in mind behind them.

I heard that PoppaNoDoz is a white supremacist, so who wants to ride with him any way!!!
I ride with him because he's a white supremacist!! :D

If I'm completely honest, I'd rather ride by myself; but I'll say this, there's NOTHING like riding with a good group, swapping a few tips, and tracing each other's lines to improve your riding ability. Hell, that's what superbike school is, in essence... As long as you're able to know where your limit is & when not to push it, there's a lot to be said for group riding to reach the goal becoming a better, more confident and safer rider. I'm looking forward to the next one...

PND thanks again for an awesome ride. Nothing like stretching the legs on the ladies for 300+ miles.
Yeah had a great time my ass will never be the same..... Had a blast minus my little meet and greet with the grass.... But glad I got back on the saddle and rode it out..... My body doesnt agree but my mind is happy
Honestly I believe what keeps happening is when ever I go thru a sweeping right and then right into a sweeping left I panic and that is what caused my off road adventure
