View Full Version : Are cell phones more addictive than crack?

Ever notice how strong of a hold people have on their cell phones?
Or how they absolutley refuse to put them down or even put them in their pocket or purse, because they have to carry it, this way they can have instant access to it without the 1.2 seconds it would take to bring it out?
How they can't just drive without one attached to their face?
They can't even just stand still at any given place without calling someone, texting someone, or checking facebook?
How they have serious meltdowns, crying, when they can't find their cell?...They become hysterical, literally driving as fast as they can to the phone store to get a replacement?
Do you know anyone like this or have you ever seen it?...I see it every day, all day for me...Kinda sad...

As much as i like my phone and the apps on it i could do without it. i actually hate talking on the phone. For some people it's their life line to the world. It all has to do with being popular and in the loop i guess.
NOw, my computer otoh, lol. probably same thing right?

I have the cheapest phone you can find and it might as well be a car phone becuase I rarely use it. I could throw it away tomorrow and live without it.
Only reason I have one is to call the wife when I leave work and in case of an emergency.
I am probably one of the least "connected" people out there under the age of 60!
-Facebook - nope, think it's stupid. You want to keep in touch come to the house
-Twitter - not even sure what it is
-Myspace - I think I had an account a few years ago but not sure
-Smart Phones - I can check my email when I get home if I remember to.

I've never tried crack cocaine, but I suppose there's still time. Let me finish off my crystal meth and I'll get right on it. ;)
I'm addicted to technology - period.

IT IS REDICULOUS. If ya talk to anyone that knows me you will find out that I do my damndest to not answer my phone when possible. I hate the fact that people think ya have to answer your phone. I read the book twice and no where does it say ya have to answer it. My mother in law (ex) doesn't put it down. She keeps the stupid thing logged on at all times playing friggin mafia wars? People just have no idea what is like with out it. I have employees that have taken time off so they can go home and get a phone. I hate the damn things. I just started text and actually I like it because I don't have to carry a conversation with some people. On the other hand it is very impersonal and people will text something or email something they wouldn't say to you in person. I still don't have email at work though. That's nice. I use my own as little as possible

When I lost my cell phone I told my self that I could deal with out it till I got a new one in a few weeks. But I could not hold out, I really missed having it. It's kinda like having no power at home, sure you tell your self you will be fine, but you still flip on the light switch when you walk in the room and say....damn

I forget to charge mine all the time and it will sit without power for 3 - 4 days at a time and I barely notice it's not there until somebody calls the house and says I tried calling you on your cell.
Even thou I use mine alot, I wish they would have never been invented.......

I broke my phone a couple of months ago, & went two days without it. I really didn't care, until I had to meet up with someone at the Forum. I don't even know how to do that anymore without a phone.

 BTW, love the new avatar!
The new phones are addictive because they can now do so much.
One particular Saturday morning I awoke with the itch to go riding. I checked my weather app and it told me it would be a great day so I patted the wife on her rear (didn't need an app to do that :sinister:) and told her "let's go riding!".
We get dressed and all geared up. I locate QSL on the navigation program, mount my phone on my RAM mount, plugged it up to the bike's socket and start the tunes. I'm happily jamming along while that same phone tells me where to go (not where most people tell me to go.. :D).
We get there and I call my daughter to let her know we arrived safe. That weekend, there were quite a few classic cars so I pull out the phone and took a few pictures...
Modern phones pack ALOT of utility in a very small package. My iPhone is my first smart phone and it literally has changed the way I live. Before the iPhone, my cell was just a device for letting my family get a hold of me when I wasn't home, now I'm getting ready to swap my car's stereo for one that will charge it and I keep a charger under my bike's seat, that little phone has extended it tendrils into so many aspects of my life that I may legally change my name to "iWhore"...

I could go without my phone and be fine. I don't use it that much. I mainly use it to text/call Tim.
Tim on the other hand. His phone is another appendage. He's always texting. Actually, he has backed off some, I must admit. But he did go through a time period where he would text ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME and it'd seriously piss me off because we literally couldn't do anything together without him texting - we had many arguments over that (of course with the exception of 1 thing :sinister: cause you KNOW that would end a relationship). LOL! Whenever we leave to go somewhere, his phone is the first thing he grabs and if he forgets it, all hell breaks loose. Heaven forbid if I forget mine at the house (to him), I don't care if I do, but he feels I have to have it on me at all times, even if he's going with me.

If i forgot my wallet at home, id probably go to work without it... If i forgot my blackberry... id be turning around to get it and call work to explain why. plain an simple, phones have become a lifeline for many of us, especially those of us in sales an rely on them non stop.

There was a time where I could live without my phone, but now? doubt it.
Since upgrading to a droid phone, I'm basically able to call, text, email IM, everything my computer does, n the road. and it doubles as my camera and freakin MP3 player.
I could do without the phone part though. literally only 3 people ever really call me.

Yup I would day im pretty addicted, when I lost all of my numbers switching phone I thought it was worse than the Apocalypse! I thought the world was going to end right then and there! I know seems pathetic but its true.
But other times I leave my phone in the car and it'll sit there for a couple hours and I don't really care.
So it really just depends what type of mood im in.

got to have mine,i mean i dont need it for work but its my texting machine, portable comp.where i can take care of emails and other related stuff,i delete stuff on the phone and its off the house comp.at the same time, forget to pay a bill i can do it at lunch right on the phone, plus its my camera and right now i have over 2500 pics organized in folders right there on the phone. heck i only turn the home one on to play on sites-which i do at lunch but run out of time.so yea i need it but if it were a choice and had to i could do without it except for the fact of our 15 mo old grandboy incase of an emergency i need to know now not when i get home later.i do think in a short amount of time smart phones will take over more of our lives based on technology and easability so im getting on it now. hell i got a buddy at work with a16 inch tv basic cable no comp no cell and has no idea what goes on in the world unless someone else tells him.

Another cell addiction story...
For the past couple of nights, every time I'd wake up, I'd have this song in my head. Last night it was severe enough to where I couldn't get back to sleep. So I got my reading glasses, my cell and a pair of headphones and began searching for the song and lo and behold it was "It don't Come Easy" by Ringo Starr.
...about an hour afterwards I fell asleep...

I wouldn't know about cell-phone or crack addiction but these behaviours you refer to simply confirm what I already knew, and that is that most people are retarded :D
I do not know of anyone behaving like this though. If I did I would have already beaten them before shoving the phone down their throat for them to choke on.
