1. Twenty years ago, you weren't even supposed to touch your front brake. You'd flip right over on your face, so the stories went. Five years ago, racers and riders were preaching the exact opposite: "Don't even bother with the rear brake; the front is all you need." So, in the pursuit of the ultimate braking performance provided by your average Bandit 600S, we hooked up our Stalker radar gun and the laptop computer and set out to solve the big braking question: What is the optimum braking procedure, and how do you do it?

Keep in mind the figures are using 1995 (15 year old) brake technology on a Bandit 600.

Keith Code says he never uses the rear brake except maybe pulling into the garage. So basically, from the stats in the article, you're only giving up 5 feet if you don't use the rear brakes. Plus that takes out the chance of locking up the rear.

I agree with moke.
I squeeze the front brake, first and progressively and then start stepping on the rear, again-progressively, and then, in case of a "panic" stop I'll even drop 2 gears at a time and use the engine for braking as well. I'm not saying it's the right way, but it has always worked for me.
I've been braking this way for over 200,000k miles and since 1977.

Btw- 78: I'll take that 5 ft over the "chance of locking" everytime! :)
