View Full Version : Bike Wont Start!!!!?

Put on some new clip ons last night now the bike wont start but
I havent fired her up in about a week or two.

I can jump her but its a bitch. Push starting should crank a cycle right up after
just a couple steps I gotta take like 20.
When she was running she ran perfect no bogs,no hesitation, idled fine.
Anyways Im not getting anything from the start button (cleaned contact area)
my red indicator light stays on and the oil icon on the lcd stays on after systems check(fuel pumps kicks on)

I checked for an error code in dealer mode and it came up c00 which
means nothing is wrong (so Ive read).

I can see maybe something wrong with the start button (wiring) but for
her to be so hard to push start has got me baffled.

is the harness plugged in at the other end? fuse?

does the starter button work?

after you get it running, does the kill switch kill the bike?

keep it simple and check your battery first...then look into replacing the switch. The lights may go on, but it doesnt mean there is enough juice to run the starter. Do you hear any clicking from the starter at all when you attempt to start it up? that usually indicates a weak battery.

If you can jump the bike, chances are the battery was weak. Usually...once you jump a bike battery, its pretty much fried. May wanna look into replacing that.

how long has that battery been in the bike?

Push starting her is alot easier like it should be.
But as far as the button goes nothing not a click just silence.

What I meant by "jumping" is jumping on her back push starting her...didnt mean
to confuse you.
The battery is fine.

I checked everything fuse, harness, kill switch operation all working fine.

Whats the tool called that you use to see if your getting juice in a wire?
ohm meter or would it be a volt meter.
Im not good at electrical.

Holy shit is it hot in the garage:chair:
Thanks guys.

you are looking for a multi meter.

i would see if you are getting any current to the wire at the harness and work your way up from there.

did you unplug or forget to plug anything else in? maybe missed a step?

No I didnt unplug anything.
Only loosened the necessary bolts to do the job.

F&^king electrical I guess I gotta learn sometime.

did you pull the switch apart?

Are you trying to start it while it's in gear? It may seem obvious, but it won't start or do shit 'til you put in neutral.

I did pull the switch apart (just the 2 bolts that hold it together) I made sure
not to yank and tug so I wouldnt snap any wires.

I dont see any visible damage but anything is possible so I will run through it
again.

You have to pull the clutch to start so it doesnt matter if its in gear.

PM BuckWild750 he had a problem like this with his 750. Not sure if it was the same problem you are having but I know he had to replace the switch. I was several months ago but I think he is the guy you need to talk to here.

Dis it true. It all seemed to happen with a few hours. I was riding and noticed my head light would not come, but the bike was running fine so we just thought it was the fuse. We rode around for a while then stopped. I went to start it and absolute nothing.

Wound up there is a metal contact inside the switch assembly. When pushed in it would move away from the headlight contact and it would shut off while starting. It would then contact another metal contact to give electric to the starter.

Since it bent it could not touch the headlight contact or the starter contact.

I wound up having to buy a new switch assembly off of Ebay.

But in the mean timed I rigged up a switch from Radioshack to start it. Hope this helps.

If it is the same problem as mine, you have to disasemble it all the way to see it. It was a real pain in the ass.

It looks like a PITA.
I just checked all solder points and everthing is intact.

At least with the aftermarket clip ons all I have to do is losen a few bolts
and slide out the bar.

I guess I'll start with the Multi Meter first if I get voltage I will take the
switch apart.

Thanks guys

I picked up a voltage meter. How the hell do I use it.
Are you supposed to pierce the wire with the red probe?
This seems a little difficult to use on a cycle by myself especially trying
to test the wires leading from the switch.

Any suggestions?

you are either looking for power, volts, when the key is on, and the switch is in the on position. or if you have both ends of the wire, you are looking for resistance, ohms, this will tell you if the wire within the sheathing is broken or seperated.

your bike is 12V DC so make sure you have it on the correct setting. the black just needs to touch a ground somewhere on teh bike.

start with your battery to get a feel for it. should read 11-12 volts with the bike off.

as far as the switch is concerned, you'll want to test ohms. when it is not pressed it should be infinite (no reading), and when it is pressed it should be zero (or very close). mine is a fancy one with a tone when it is zero ohms. you can test your meter for about what reading you should get with the switch pressed by touching both probes together.

as far as accessing the bare wire, you're on your own. maybe trace the wires to a connector and stick it in there, or if it's a small female contact, use a paperclip or something similar to make contact in each connector contact and touch your probes to that.

and yes, it was hot as balls today. i was out in the yard/garage for hours.

The POS meter I bought wouldnt test 12v luckily my AC guy is here installing
a new unit and he had a nice tester.
Tap the battery first registered 12 and then touched the prob to the
2 solder points (disassembled switch completely) and got no reading at all.

Looks like I have to order a new switch assembly.
According to the manual No voltage=faulty ignition switch
Voltage=starter relay.

I've got a LONG list of stuff to do myself to get The_B!tch's bike back on the road and get my LCD screens redone.

But you are welcome to come over and wrench on it here if you need too.
