The Governor has signed the following two Bills that ABATE of Florida, Inc. was supporting into law.
CS/CS/SB 1100 Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles [CPSC]: The Bill that removes the "horizontal" wording of the motorcycle tag was signed by Officers and presented to Governor on 06/08/09 .
Here is the wording of this bill as it relates to motorcycles:
"Section 4. Subsection (3) of section 316.2085, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
316.2085 Riding on motorcycles or mopeds.—
The license tag of a motorcycle or moped must be permanently affixed to the vehicle and may not be adjusted or capable of being flipped up. No device for or method of concealing or obscuring the legibility of the license tag of a motorcycle shall be installed or used."

so is this actually in place now? my gixxer has a plate running vertical on the left side of the rear wheel.
and believe it or not, i was riding my rc51 one night and got pulled over by pcso. the plate is/was vertical, but if you looked at it from the side it had about a 75 degree angle. guy said he pulled me over because it has to be straight up and down and can have no angle at all.
it was so minor of an angle i just got off and bent it down slightly with my hands.

It still doesn't help the flip-up hinge that holds my plate on... lol!

Hahahahaha that's funny, the trooper that pulled me over the other day just got through telling me that having a horizontal plate was a $1000 fine. I bet they're still writing tickets for this, although I'm sure it's easy to get it dropped if they know about this.
Honestly I'm glad you posted this because I really didn't know.

Isn't there another statute stating something to the effect that the plate must have a light and also be placed at the rear most section of the motorcyle?
still good to know.

I'm not sure if being 'zip-tied' to your rear passenger pegs would be considered 'permanently affixed' or be considered unobscured visually from 100' feet away. If it's left to a matter of opinion' by LEOs then you could get Effed. Not worth it IMO. If you get hit with a $1,000 fine because you didn't do it the right way the first time you'll sorely regret it.

laws are not retroactive in terms of fines already paid
you go to jail for a crime you didnt commit they let you out and say sorry about that. no compensation or whatnot. same pricipal applies here.

Thats because 1) none of us are traffic officers and 2) we were hoping you'd be a grown up and look up the info your dam self.
316.2085 Riding on motorcycles or mopeds.--
(3) The license tag of a motorcycle or moped must be permanently affixed to the vehicle and may not be adjusted or capable of being flipped up. No device for or method of concealing or obscuring the legibility of the license tag of a motorcycle shall be installed or used.
use your better judgement... i'd go w/ no. Like easy said... as much as you'd like to think it, your zip ties arent permanent and also allow you to flip the plate.
Oh an here is another reason why its a no:
316.410 Taillamps.--
(2) Either a taillamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear.
Youre welcome.

:+1 You're right. Friend of mine got pulled over 3 weeks ago for his plate. Cop said he could have written him a ticket but let him go on a warning. Apparently officers need to do a little review.

I need to get a led on my tag then, I have no light. I figured the law for the light didnt change...Idk what i should do to get a light on mine, its mounted off of the muffler with one of those brackets that go around the pipe.

my tag is on the rear of my bike right under my tail light, the fender elim i got off ebay makes the plate stick out a little bit from the rear so my tail light makes it pretty lit up. granted its not a WHITE light, its just my red tail light, ive never had any problems with it an ive had cops pull directly behind me

they make a fender eliminator kit for the r1 that goes in between the passenger pegs that doesnt allow any bending of any sort and has lights. now that would be legal correct?
