Did some work on my bike today, went out on a slow test ride... Glad I did. My new oil filter gasket blew out went I finally let into the bike, thought the back end was sliding because the chain was tight, then a block away the whole thing was all over the place. Got it under control (felt like my back wheel was falling off) and slowed down, pulled off the road, and found my ALL of my oil had shot out all over me, the bike and both wheels, and unfortunately for my friend behind me all over him and the front of his bike.... I had actually cleaned the damn thing for once too.... Glad it happened when it did and not when I might have been hauling ass across the bridge..... I'm not sure exactly why it happened but I'll look at it in the daylight tomorrow. At least I know my oil pressure is good....:banghead:
I had hoped to go to the meet tonight. Next week.

Thanks, but no- I'm not looking at it that way, I'm counting my lucky *****'s it could have been much worse.... What an oily mess. I'm just glad no one (myself included) got hurt.

Now I wonder how you'd blow out the oil filter gasket? Is it a manufacturers defect or did you do something wrong when you installed it. It's pretty straight forward so messing it up is almost impossible. What brand filter was it? Some details would help others avoid this problem. Also glad to hear that you got mad skillz on da bike!!!

I would be real carefull on those tires. They soak in the oil and as they heat up the oil will come to the surface. I would look into a new backtire for sure.

Upon inspection and the beginning of de-oiling this morning I discovered that my dumb-a$$ had missed the old gasket stuck on and one blew out the side. Never done anything like THAT before, never will again either. Lesson learned!
:banghead:
Went at it with the degreaser this morning and now about to go at it with the contact cleaner. What a mess. Good thing it wasn't a purty bike to begin with.

WD-40 is a great cleaner, and you can get it for about $11 a gallon.

I guess with me anything is possible!
We are beyond WD-40, that was my first try. It's getting there though.

Holy siht girl!
Glad to hear you're ok.
That's why I don't do my own maintenance. Or why I didn't.
It doesn't get much worse than oil, except maybe blood.
See you soon.:biker:

honestly, you are better off doing your own maintenance than letting someone else do it. at least you know that you will do it correctly, or do it at all.

Well thats if you know exactly what you are doing. Not thinking what you are doing is right, just to save a few $$$

yeah but there are too many idiots that dont ask how its done.. Just like you when you. You would rather drive 50 miles out of the way than go and ask for directions.

Well I knew exactly what I was doing, the only sort of mechanical work that I don't fare well with is electrical (and that's more because it frustrates the crap outta me). I used to work in a garage. I just got careless I guess, was in a hurry and it was almost dark out. Like I said- lesson learned. It will be a while before I live this one down, I'm the butt of my friend's jokes right now but I guess if you dish it out you have to take it too. :worship:
Even the simplest things can be major if you are not paying full attention to what you are doing.
