I hear great things about the school in dade city so if it were me I would go there. better to start them with the best instruction you can find/afford.
As for 2/4 stoke.
2 strokes are easy to work on once you know how, but the maintenance is pretty high.
The 4 stoke is pretty reliable they some time take a bit to warm up but once they are they are very dependable.
The 2 stoke is very torquey but that could teach him very good throttle control if is doesn't discourage him.
The 4 stoke is a lot smother but lacks that low end power.
Plus unless you are buying an older bike they stopped selling the 2 stroke.

I see they have 85cc,but is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke. I also want to make sure he can race in other spots with the same bike.
the 2 stroke/4 stroke question is for what are they allowing or is it both?

I'd say give them a call and get first hand info on the regulations of that class.
I'd go with an 85cc two stroke bike. Just the right combination of size and power for a juvenile rider 12 years old. Most newer bikes have disk brakes and either a five or six speed transmission with modern suspension.
If you buy a bike from Pep Boys, you end up getting a yard bike. A bike you can ride around the yard only but I wouldn't take it to a motocross track or expect to go deep woods riding without a tow rope.
My current dirt bike is a 2008 KTM 300XC two stroke. My youngest son is 14 and started riding a 125 after growing out of the 85 class. I also ride a 490 Maico, which is not for the faint of heart.

Man, a number of us are always talking dirt around here. All you gotta do is ask.
I'd do some research on the local MX tracks. I like Dade City where they have rider classes on weekends and nights for practice and races.
Heres the group I run with. www.floridatrailriders.org/ Our events are statewide. You can get into running local events at the local tracks too.

you have to remember that you DO NOT buy a bike/car that you plan to race until you KNOW what class or what type of racing you intend to do and if it the car/bike fits the regulations of the series, race, class you intend to race in.
I know your probably well aware of that sideshow just by reading your posts but figured i'd throw it out there for others who may not know...

From my experience riding moto-x (since I was a lil one) the 4 strokers have more torque down low and less power up top than the 2 strokers. The 2 strokes are gutless in the low revs but after about 2500 RPM you'd better be hanging on! Especially with the power valve! 4 strokes are much smoother because the power comes on in a smooth curve VS the 2 stroke where it goes flat then medium then to WIDE ASS OPEN, WHITE KNUCKLE, HANG ON mode!!
PSSST... They still make and sell 2 strokes!

^ don't buy a KTM unless you like maintenance.
nice pics.
Hey shorty can you help me with some info on this.I wanna get my lilsideshow a bike real soon and racing. He is 12.
what size bike?? 2 stroke/4stroke to buy him?? info on races ??
has he ridden before?
I think at 12 yrs they are in the 85cc class. If he has not ridden before, he might be able to ride in the 65cc beginner class before he moves up.
dade city class structure. http://www.dadecitymx.com/HTML/8%20MX%20CLASS%20STRUCTURE.html
I don't know about the other tracks.
as far as a bike goes, it is a toss up between a 2 and 4 stroke. the 4 stroke will not require as much maintenance as a 2 stroke, but if he is not riding a 2 stroke hard, it should not need a whole lot of maintenance either.
the best thing is to take him out there and watch the races to see if he is interested in them. he might be interested in trail riding, then you would not want to get a mx bike, you would want to get a dirt bike.
also take him to the dealers and have him sit on some bikes, to see what he fits, then start shopping around.

My 4 stroke has 0 low end
The Suzuki 2 stroke RM85 is torquey all over the place.............
When I got my Yamaha's last year said it was the last year they were putting out the 2 strokes. Honda stopped a before that. I believe Kawi did too.

Pro's & Con's to both 2 Strokes Vs. 4 Strokes.
With a 4stroke he'll find Jumping a little easier...with the way they have these local tracks Design.
Just Don't let off the Gas on the face Of a Jumps/In the Air with the 4 Stroke...The Engine Braking will Drop the front Fast!
It's all about U're Style of riding..when selecting a Smoker vs, a Thumper..As with selecting between Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki..
They all do different things really Good..

so when he is old enough to go to jennings he will whop your ass????lol jk
There are many variables with both the four and two stroke model bikes. Basically, two strokes are lighter, less maintenance and less parts. A two stroke rebuild is about half the cost of a four stroke rebuild. Four strokes are a little heaver, plenty of torque and in many conditions and high speed tracks have their benefits too. Some of the newer tracks and jumps are designed with the four stroke motor in mind.
Currently most motorcycle manufacturers production are targeting four strokes as the future of dirt bikes. Honda was the first to stop producing two strokes because it wanted to concentrate all its efforts and funds on the four stroke models which run from pee wee bikes up to the 450. Yamaha has many four stroke models that mirror Honda's efforts. Two strokes remain excellent platform bikes at a reduced overall cost. Parts are still available for most two stroke models.
KTM makes a number of models in both two and four stroke configuration. KTM spends it time and efforts on off road efforts and not to much on MX.
Riding fundamentals are pretty much the same for both so it doesn't matter which one you start with.
