Im thinking about selling my gsxr and going dirt. What are your opinions on 2 stroke vs 4 stroke.

4 stroke easier to ride,(broad powerband)/a little more weight. Also, no mixing fuel.
2 stroke rebuilds cheaper but more often.

2 stroke for the win unless you just want to cruise

I know it depends on how you ride, but on average, how often does a 2 stroke need to be rebuilt Vs a 4 stroke. And of course what kind of hit does the wallet take?
I am thinking about going for a used bike/quad due to the depreciation that dirt toys have so the 2 stroke is an option for me.

4 stroke makes alot more torque.. easier week to week.. Harder to ride.. depending on what you get.. the new 450's can be alot to handle..
2 stroke cheap to rebuild.. Not as fast as a 4 stroke..
I've had a couple newer 2 stroke 250's.. and a 4 stroke 250f and 450f's.. I would never go back to a 2 stroke.. So much more fun to ride a 4 stroke.. and a shit load of power..

Actually I think the 2 has a lot more low end where the 4 has it in the high end.
A 2 will throw you easy the 4 is smoth on the low side but watch out once it's up there. and the have a much beter top speed

So does that mean 4 strokes is better then 2?
Seriously though...if you guys were to buy something dirt related today would you buy the 2 or 4?
Im leaning more towards a dirtbike but im open to hearing from the quad guys as well.

I double the pleasure verses you 2 stroke guys.
I just hate mixing gas&oil.......and at the same time it makes the tree huggers happier.

F the tree huggers...I want the most bang for my buck :Yelrotflm
I think im leaning more towards the 4 stroke. I have seen some 05 F models on craigslist that appear to be in good condition. Would you guys go with a used dirt machine that old or would you suggest sticking with something a little newer?

Actually Ping LiquidIQ I thinkhe is still selling a bad ass 450 for a great price
What type of riding are you planning to do? Trail, motocross, cross crounty, dual sport or whatever.
Another very important item is are you going to ride by yourself or a few others or are you going to be riding with a number of friends that already have established quads or bikes. Most bikes ride with bikes, quads with quads and each group targets what each do best. You will have some that do both but it's more fun if you have riding buddies with similiar interests.

I havent ridden dirt since I was a kid and all of that was trail riding. With that being said, places like croom are on the list but I would also like to try a few motocross tracks as my skill improves.
My friends that do ride dirt all have quads at the moment. I think I am looking more at the 450F dirtbikes (although I havent ruled out quads) so I can have the option of a possible motard conversion if I choose to go in that direction. I just like to have options.

IDK.. i've noticed in mine.. that the 4 has alot more down low.. the 2 take's RPM's to make power.. 4 strokes can't turn the same kinda RPM's as a 2..
but the 2 strokes are alot cheaper to rebuild..

I went to sunshine MX tonight and thats definatly something i want to try if i get a dirt bike. Looked like a blast.
Might want to lean towards a four stroke if you are looking at some basic trail riding, working your way up to motocross and still have a very good option for motard. Probably at least a 450. I'd stick with a blue, red or orange bike for what you described. The yellow bikes are okay and are coming out with fuel injection but the others are already established for what they do already with less tinkering needed. Don't forget that on four strokes you check the valves every 40 hours regardless. Many riders run a time clock so they know when they have to check the valves. Maintenance and repair is greater on the four stroke, thats why you are always keeping close track so you don't have those expensive problems. In reality, most valves don't require much attention but it's better to be safe then sorry because of the cost of not keeping on eye on it anyway. If you find a four stroke with a plate like many of the orange bikes you can always upgrade the lighting kit, put on DOT tires, add some extras like a horn and mirror and take it to the streets.
For some additional ideas, take a look at the Florida Trail Riders web site, www.floridatrailriders.org/ where we do motocross racing, quad racing, hare scrambles, enduros, etc., in state wide competition. Go onto the forum and into the individual race videos. They can be pretty neat. There's even some shots of me flying by here and there too. Pretty fun by can be addictive and expensive at the same time. There's even an FTR club that runs out of the Tampa Bay area too. Our club just held a hare scramble up in Brooksville earlier last month.

i love and will swear by 2 strokes.. its a dying breed though :(
KTM is still making two strokes. Honda is shifting all their energy towards four strokes especially the smaller ones and thats why the discontinued the two stroke line. Blue and Green are slowly following suit.

Thanks for the info Vrod. As far as the plates go, do they make conversion kits for the CRF models to put them on the road as well?
In a one word answer, NO. That's not saying you can go the long way around and get one after a long uphill battle and still not get it. Problem is Honda doesn't give a title with it's dirt bikes and the original MSO states, off road use only. When purchasing KTM's you have an option for the extra paperwork and tag fee for a titled vehicle. Many used KTM's are already titled by the original owner and that increases their value. I understand this tag option even on KTM's is only available to the original owner at the time of the original purchase. This is discussed every once in a while in the FTR forum section and on the Dixie Dual Sport web site.
We are racing hare scrambles this weekend in Ona, near Sarasota and next weekend and Gatorback Park outside Gainsville.

Buy your dirtbike in a state that allows the conversion. Have the title issued there.
When you transfer the title to FL, you won't have a problem registering the bike.
I just did it with my DRZ400E :biker:
Instead of a converted dirt bike you might want to consider a street legal supermoto, best of both worlds less maintenance :occasion1
5K to 6K buys you a like new street legal KTM sumo. If you buy one I promise I'll go ride with you once I put my SM back together (getting closer every day!)

I loved riding dirt as a kid and thats kind of why Im looking in that direction again. Im just not having fun street riding any more and i cant afford the costs of going to JGP that often. Its not the bike its the local riding environment that im having the issue with. I wont stop riding but I am looking at the possibility of changing my riding style.

I like it....when I go out i want to play....on the street it catches the wrong attention and I can't relax when I want due to cops and cages. In dirt it's basically between you and the trees.....I'm happier with those odds.

I just dont know what size would be a good one for me, im a big dude, so i dont know if a 250 would be to small!
If u don't want to go bigger CC's or Quad!,,
U could always change out the Spring.....Which is something all should have done..according to their wt...
If u do that...Chances are u'll have to change the internals of the forks also!
