That a real good question. one time I saw a guy on a cruiser with his boy (I'm thinkin between 7-10) strapped to his waste with one of those weight belts so he was always connected. I dont know if thats a good idea?

That's good advice.
My daughter is five and I went out and bought her a 3/4 helmet, gloves, jacket, and boots. I just putted around the neighborhood with her a ocuple times, but I have eased off doing that since my girlfriend freaked out and wanted no part of it.
I was very, VERY careful and didn't go over 25 mph. My kid loved it. She's been asking me to take her to school and pick her up from school on the bike.
I can't do that, yet, because there are some major roads with really bad traffic and really bad drivers between here and there. However, she has expressed an interest in riding dirt bikes and I would like to encourage this.
My concern is that she hasn't learned to ride a bicycle yet. Have any of you had experience with this situation?

MSF usually says not until their feet can touch the pegs and they can hold on. Also kiddos on sportbikes aren't recommended because no backrest / sissy bar.

Hard to say really I started with my dad before I could walk. He would put me in front of him on the tank and go around the neighborhood. By the time I was 5-6 I was going on trips with him. Got my first Dirk bike at 10 and my first street bike at 15. My father-in-law take his granddaughters out on his Goldwing and has since they were about 4.
On the other hand my daughter is 8 and she is not ready to be on a bike. She is too scared and if she jumps or something while taking a turn it’s all over. When she comfortable around bike more I will start taking her. It depends on the kid and of course all gear is needed.

I have ridden my kids around the block in the neighborhood for years. Since like 2 yrs old. My oldest is now 8 and they have all been riding dirt bikes for a few yrs also.
Even After all this I still don't think I would ever take any of my children on the back of my bike out on these roads with these crazy F-ing cagers. What if i had to make a quick move to avoid some blue hair pulling out and they fell off? Or stop suddenly and they fell?
I would never be able to live with myself if I hurt one of my kids or scarred or deformed them for life at such a young age.
Just my 2 pennies.
If anyone has a child that wants to ride and has the proper equipment, we can get the Child Saftey Strap at the store. It goes around the rider and hooks to the child for extra safety.

I agree with you on the sportbike. We bought a cruiser with a sissy bar just so my daughter can ride. I don't think I would feel safe with her on a Gixxer or Busa.

Gixxer1k WILL NOT take our little one on his bike AT ALL! (he's 6) I told him a few times " just take him down to the stop sign and back" and he said "NO WAY" now, he has taken my older son which is 13 out even on hillsborough Ave. They came home and my son had that SHIT eatin grin on his face. First thing outta his mouth was " can i have your 250 when you get rid of it?" My husband can ride the hell out of any bike. (just ask Madraven, he'll vouch for me). So i am not scared to have my older son go with him. Now he's only gone with Gixxer about three times. It IS to crazy out there for him to go on a really long ride. That's just my opinion though.

Lucky for me, I have a sissy bar and really short rear pegs.
My daughter fits on the bike with her feet on the pegs. She has never had a problem holding on or with going to sleep (another thing I worry about) while on the bike.
There's this gizmo for kids that straps to rider and passenger, has a passenger crotch strap, and HANDLEBARS for the little anklebiter to hold on to. It's about $400, though. It's as wide as a weightbelt and looks tough as nails, but I don't think it's necessary for the casual ride around the block.
I, too, would feel awful if my kid go really hurt/scarred/disfigured with me.
Her mom (my ex) would have my ass in a proverbial sling, too.
I think I'll just stick to neighborhoods for now. Maybe when she's 8 or 9, I'll start taking her down some light-traffic roads.
Thanks for all your input, guys.

fla. stautes say they (minors) must be in their own seat, be able to touch the passenger pegs with their feet and have a proper fitting and approved helment as well as eye protection if it isn't a full face. checked on this b4 2uping my granddaughter.
