View Full Version : need some input on wheelies

So ive finally gotten comfortable enough to reload the throttle in 1st to get the front tire up a little bit. But i cant seem to get it any higher then 4-8 inches off the ground... Anyone have any input on a way to take it up a bit higher so i can get comfortable with the tire raising up (im obviously not even remotely trying to reach my balance point yet but i want to get the feel for it raising up a little bit more)
ive tried reloading it in 2nd but cant get it to come up at all, even in high RMP's... and i suck pretty bad at clutching up, i can never seem to get it to work...
Im switching my sprockets -1 +2 in the next month or so, im sure that will help a ton, but for the meantime, any input is appriciated.

Chris, you are gonna kill StuntworksMatt and others with questions like this, and might even get flamed, to Imma do you a favor. I kinda half asleep so I'll answer you and everyone else can just +1 underneath me.
Your different sprocket setup is not needed.
1. Get a cage.
2. Remove all plastics unless its a daily driver and you care how you look.
3. Get an easy pull clutch (1 finger)
4. 12 Bar will help because you can go past BP and save on bar.
5. Raise your idle up high. (smoothes out the wheelie)
6. Tire pressure I started is 10 psi, as you get better raise it.
7. Clutch it high as hell and lightly catch with your foot brake.
8. Stiffen up all your suspension.
9. If you can, practice BP on a 4 wheeler for a while.
10. Practice, Practice, Practice. Eventually you will get it.
Speed Kills, Slow Thrills.
:+1 , I just woke up too.:occasion1
Go to one of Mosh's Sunday Stuntdays or to the Friday stuntnight, there are always many people there that can help you out. Bottom line though, practice, the more comfortable you are the higher you will take it. Right now you aren't giving it enough throttle. Once you learn to clutch it up, you won't want to power it up anymore. Always remember to cover the rear brake and learn to use it to bring the wheelie back down, IT WILL SAFE YOUR ASS! Have fun out there and be safe.:occasion1

+1 on Stuntday's!!!
Practice in a safe environment around lots of people to help and assist.
I'd go with the gtearing, I did on both my bikes.
Def get a cage.
You won't need the bar for some time.
The more you practice the higher it'll get.
It's all about getting comfortable on ure machine.
By the way, I'm doing a stuntday this Sunday...http://www.tampasportbikes.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14935

find out where the torque would be a best pull for it...on a straight 4 it would be about 3-4 on the rpms.....(that is x 1000)....and dump then rip it full open....
on the sv i have mine at close to 6.5, dump and rip and it (on an close to empty tank) will almost feel like it will flip...
but i tried it at about that on the straight 4 or the v-twin and works....(even on my moms i popped it....)
but the dump and rip is important....

never tell someone to dump it lmao it kills me to see people use a clutch to get it up...i have seen to many people flip it when using a clutch

Using the clutch is more predeictable, it is just scary as hell until you get used to it. When you power it up you are relying on the powerband of the bike to bring it up which takes longer to get the bike to balance point. I have seen videos of many people looping it while powering it up.
The key is to take it slow, and +1 on the cage if you don't wanna F your junk up. An alternative to a cage would be Race Railz.

They aren't as bulky as a cage, almost as effective. but Way better than sliders. I got mine from Pure Acceleration, got em 3 days after ordering them.
Good luck out there.:occasion1

dump it is referring to the gas, dump and rip...means throtle back to nothing really fast, then rip it wide or almost wide open....
i have no problem with clutch ups...because my hand is still on the clutch, and foot on break ready......
and i had the sv, v-twin....the torque machine....(when i clutch it up i could have it set at 2,500 rpms and dump the clutch and it popped high, vs power up at close to 6,000 rpm to get it the same hight.....the clutch is just faster)

Go to one of the stunt meets, plenty of peeps willing to give you usefull input and support.
I'll set my speed around 30-35mph doing about 5K rpms, push down a bit on the front and rev it at the same time. Always works for me and I ride an '03 600RR 3+ in the rear, stock in the front.

Dump it refers to the clutch. Closing the throttle to compress the forks and getting back on it is called 'bouncing it' by most people.

Wow hicks... you so called it... chris, take your time and keep clutching, ignore rpms or speed or whatever, just do it by feel, if you feel your too high or too fast then let off, remember your the best judge of whats comfortable and what works for you. if you wanna get higher then just grow some balls and give it some gas. itll come, just be patient and keep practicing.
as for you 2... murphy and todd... your both total f*cking retards... neither one of you have any room to give anyone advice. So stop doing it before someone actually listens to you and gets hurt.

really no im trying to keep someone from hurting themselfs...telling someone to grow balls is just like calling someone a puss and pushing them...i do agree with you about..... just do it by feel, if you feel your too high or too fast then let off, remember your the best judge of whats comfortable and what works for you.
but when you say i have no room to give advise i think you need to check who you are talking to i have been stunting since 99 I have ridden with Todd Colbert,Kyle Woods the Bunell brothers and many others.

The best thing Matt said is pretty much what I already said as well.
It all comes down to knowing ure bike and feel.
Everybodies got their own style and preeferance and what works well for one guy might not work as well for the next.
I've gotten so good at powering it up that I really don't need to clutch it up, unless I wanna start pulling slow stuff.
I can power it right to the balance point , whereas most people just can't control the bike in first gear on a power wheelie.
Come out Sunday and you will get what ure looking for and then some.

And just because you rock a couple of half ass 90mph flamingos on the highway doesnt mean your a pro stunter. i put my time in and can prove it at the spot any day. So ante up or shut up... and get spell check.

I know im not really one to talk considering im still in training but as one noob giving advice to another (advice given to me)
Clutch it up a thousand times.
see how that feels
then do it a thousand times more.
dont push yourself to far or else you will be sitting on the ground laughing your ass off as you watch you bike wobble down the road
