what is the life expectancy of a leather jacket, with it being exposed to the open elements such as rain, extreme heat and UV rays. at what point would it no longer hold up or be unsafe to wear.

as long as you keep it clean and its not dry rotted... i would inspect all the hems and stitching.. and velcros and straps too... zippers for signs of wear and tear... basically... as long as the jacket doesnt break apart when u wear it.. haah

good question I would think it would be warn out when the liner starts to tear and threads start coming out of the seams... with me a jacket only has a life of about two years

you gotta remember... a leather jacket.. or a jacket period.. its supposed to be like your second layer of skin... you want it to stay in place in case of a crash

Their should be some type of oil (mink oil?) you can clean it with. I know the Dainese leathers I always purchase come with a oil and a cleaner. That will keep the leather clean and prevent it from dry rot, and cracking. Check with some of the leather companies they should offer a cleaner and replenishing oil.

...I'd think it would be more of a visual thing verses a time frame......Look it over with eyes and hands, make sure it feels the way it should.

the life of a jacket is determined by how you care for it, how often it is worn, how its stored, and most importantly. how often you find it on you and sliding across pavement.
